Ravenna is a city of mosaics - a city to die for! World Heritage listed early Christian monuments that I visited in Ravenna in December 2006 include Neonian Baptistry 5th century, Galla Placidia Mausoleum 5th century, Arian baptistry 6th century, Archiepiscopal Chapel 6th century, basilica of Sant'Apolinare Nuovo 6th century, Mausoleum of Theodoric 6th century, Basilica of San Vitale 6th century and Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe 6th century.

Mi Piace Italiano!

The Language Challenge
My thirst for all things Italian saw me learning the language at the Institute of Modern Languages at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
My first course used the BBC text Talk Italian.
The second and third courses used Espresso 1.

Mi Piacciono Biscotti!

Biscotti

The current issue of Italianicious (Vol.5 Iss.1 Autumn 2009) has a lovely selection of biscotti recipes. YUM!
(Dolci di Mandorle; Tozzetti; Dolci dei Morti)
Information about the magazine can be found on their web site

Mi Piace Torcello!

Torcello
The island of Torcello is in the Venetian lagoon and reached by ferry from Venice. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, located on the island has a wonderful programme on Byzantine mosaics. I visited Torcello on a freezing December day in 2006. I don't think I have ever experienced such a cold day, but the mosaics were worth the chill!
